November 5-11 is Remembrance Week in Canada. At 11 am French time on November 11, 1918; an armistice came into effect ending over four years of the most brutal and lethal war in human history, up to that time. Over fifty million people – military and civilian – were killed in the “war to end all wars” – or, as we simply call it now, the First World War.
Remembrance Day not only commemorates victims of that war; but also for those victimized by conflicts since: World War II, the Korean War, and the War in Afghanistan; among others.
WECHCPC volunteers and staff will be honouring veterans and the war dead twice during the week. On November 8, we will be observing Indigenous Veterans’ Day by joining the parade from Main & Cordova to Victory Square at Cambie and Hastings. On November 11, we will be part of the main Remembrance Day observance. In doing so, we join people around the world who witness for equity, justice, and peace; in remembering the dead and recommitting to that work.
In collaboration with Vancouver Police Department and ICBC, we’re excited to announce a Seniors’ Safety Forum on Thursday, November 16, from 1-3 pm, at the West End Community Centre, 870 Denman St. Admission is free, and we’ll have refreshments and safety devices on hand!
Topics will include pedestrian and road safety (ICBC), street safety and fraud prevention (VPD), and home and building safety (WECHCPC). Pre-register at 604-717-2924 or info@wechcpc.com.
